Tripod
Cooking with a tripod is back to the basics of outdoor cooking. With a fixed tripod with accessories such as a grill grid, cooking pots or a wok, you can prepare a range of dishes over a wood fire. Get inspired for outdoor cooking with a tripod.
Use a tripod bbq in your own garden
We know the kamado barbecues and large outdoor kitchens. But do you already know the tripod grill? Within the range of barbecues you will find many different types of barbecues, but cooking with a tripod is really something else.
Type tripod BBQ's
A tripod is a construction of three long legs that is attached at the top. A tripod is used for example to cook in nature or in the garden over an open fire or fire bowl. Many tripods are delivered directly as a set. Available combinations are:
- Bbq tripod with hanging grill
- Tripod with wok
- Tripod with baking tray
- Tripod with double bbq grid
- Tripod with Dutch oven
Camping tripod
If you want to place a tripod on uneven ground, such as on the campsite, pay attention to the legs of the tripod. A pointed leg can easily be placed in the ground and is therefore more stable. The Petromax tripod is a good example of a tripod for the campsite. The pointed legs and the compact size of only 100 cm in total length make the tripod easy to use on uneven surfaces and easy to transport.
Tripod BBQ with pulley
The advantage of a tripod bbq with pulley is to check the ingredients on the grill or in the pan. By leaving the chain longer, the preparation of the dish will go faster. This is good when making burgers or a large piece of meat or heating a pan. Raise the chain to make a slowly cooked piece of meat, fish or vegetables to be cooked through and through. This form of indirect heat slows down the preparation of the ingredients and gives you more time.
Tripod bbq recipes
Cooking with a tripod is as versatile as with any other type of barbecue. Examples of Dutch oven recipes are:
- Risotto with shrimps and peas
- Eggplant curry with coconut milk and chickpeas
- Pulled pork sandwich with sweet-spicy dressing
The combination tripod with Dutch oven can be purchased immediately as a complete tripod set. But also a set with wok or double grill grate is immediately available.
How do you assemble a tripod?
A tripod is often a fixed construction that comes with mounting material. After the tripod is mounted, you can easily place it above a campfire or fire bowl. Depending on the size of the fire, many tripods can be placed wider or narrower.
- Mount the tripod according to the instruction
- Mount a possible bbq grate, wok pan or baking tray on the chain or hook
- Place the tripod over the heat and determine a good distance between the pan and the fire. Do you want to simmer over the fire a little longer? Hang the pan higher above the heat. Do you want to grill or bake something quickly? Then place the baking tray or grill lower above the fire.
Note: the chain, hook and legs of the tripod can also get warm. So always work with heat-resistant gloves.
How do you make a tripod yourself?
Be creative and make your own tripod grill. With a tripod ring you make your own tripod with a small tool.
- Purchase a tripod ring
- Choose 3 equal sticks / branches. Make sure they are thick enough to carry a heavy cast iron pan
- If necessary, drag the legs into a point to put them firmly in the ground
- Place the three legs in the tripod ring and balance the three poles until the tripod is firm and waterproof!
- Hang a pan and you can get started!
How do you lash a tripod?
Originally, the tripod construction comes from the tripod lashing construction. This was made with three equal legs and a rope. By following these steps you can make a three-pickle with simple parts.
- Find three equal legs/sticks and enough sturdy rope.
- Tie the three legs together with a few centimetres of space at an equal height.
- Wrap rope around the rope between the poles.
- Cross the two outer poles with each other so that the middle pole falls between them.
